Moving to Bay Area from Toronto

Feb 13 30 Comments

Background:
Amazon L5 5 YOE
TC: 150k CAD (117 k base remainder RSU)

Offer:
Google L3
TC: 222 k (135 k base 67 k RSU/year + 20 k sign-on bonus)

Just want to hear opinions on if I should move from Toronto to Bay Area or not and the reasons.

Need to bring girlfriend over too who isn't in tech and is a Canadian citizen...anyone have experience with that? I've heard you can only bring dependents if you are married...

@Esri ahhh ok that makes sense :/ the green card situation In the states is so wack. I highly suggest trying and applying to amazon Vancouver! They are hiring a ton right now and Vancouver is a gorgeous city. I feel like Toronto is a bit of a culture shock. It’s cold, grey, and just overall not the nicest place imo. But I might be biased as out west is home for me 😛

Also imo going to Canada for a couple years and loosing on a bit of savings is worth having the safety of the PR/citizenship. Plus, I truly think you would love Vancouver. It’s a beautiful city :)

    • @Ericsson I am definitely thinking of Amazon and MS in Vancouver, they would be great places as a C++ dev. Looking at Google too but getting an interview for Google Canada is hard from what I hear.

The trading form DRW has a Montreal office with C++ positions, would try there too.

I am planning to do this in late 2021.

The Bay Area has lots of issues. easy to surface these by reading through blind.. you’re going to have a big hit to quality of life

Could they extend an offer at Google Waterloo instead?

Your GF cannot work while with you. If she cannot get her on work permit, What are her plans?

Which issues in particular? I would bet the same issues would exist in Toronto, except the weather sucks on top, and the comp is low.

You're below the bottom of the band for L5. You could possibly try boomerang and get 200k if you love Amazon that much.

Outside, just talking about smaller companies, there're Shopify, Nvidia, Snap, Square, Uber, WealthSimple, Okta, 0Auth, Instacart, Wish, Databricks, etc. to name a few. Your sentiment about no good options besides Amazon might be true for Vancouver but not necessarily true for Toronto.

How much is Uber paying in Toronto? Comparable to Google Waterloo?

Why not google Waterloo? No where near the amount of human feces there as there is here in Bay Area.

On way to SF office this morning I stepped on a human turd and a needle...

Thats what I wanted but my recruiter keeps telling me theres no positions in waterloo at the moment. Maybe shes lying to get me to move to bay area.

      They fucked me over.

In all seriousness though that's basically L4 compensation. At the end of the day what matters more to me is the money.

150K makes you the king in T. 250K in the Bay Area, you live from hand to mouth.

The only people who say that have no idea how expensive toronto is.

    • 150k is standard comp for Toronto Director level. You do your math.

If you're getting a TN visa your dependents get a TD visa which means they can't work. Also, not sure if they'd issue it without being married. I'd figure out that with my gf first if I were you. I've seen people return to their countries because their spouses get bored to hell in a couple of years.
Google is cool, and in other comments it looks like Toronto is expensive too so the hit may not be too bad. Bay area is overcrowded, though.
What team are you in Amazon and what team would you join at Google?

Also, your gf could live here with a tourist visa but would need to exit the country every 6 months I think? Not sure how many times you can do that. Maybe enough while getting an h1b

I’m in fulfillment technologies org (software that goes into shipping/receiving in amazon warehouses). At Google its the Communications Phone/Dialer team.

She could come for 6 months but she has to be outside of the states for 6 months as well (6 months in a year). Not sure how that would work considering she would have to leave her job and live somewhere (shes currently renting a place) in Canada for 6 months too. Im not sure about getting married either, I like her, but not sure about rest of my life like her.
