Taking a London Facebook role as a E6. I'm currently a 66 at Microsoft in Seattle. TC $420k What should I be asking for as a TC? Cost of living in London (United Kingdom) is 13% more expensive than in Seattle, Washington (United States) But... Does the TC line up that way too? Should I be asking for a 13% increase from my current TC?
I saw on levels.fyi a TC of $220k in London for a E6...
-40% tax w/o any conception of tax return. Seattle is the best, especially money wise.
The pay in London is pretty shitty... That's across the market. And Facebook follows the market. It's highly likely you will be taking a pay cut without even accounting for that 13% increase in spending.
Is that level 66 in engineering or product management?
Man you’ll be extremely lucky if you can make even half of that in London
Yah, you're looking at a 30-50% cut most likely. Pay for software folks in London is generally terrible compared to the States. American tech companies and finance make it less terrible but you'll never see the same sort of numbers. (We have a London office and people do okay there but it's about 60% of what they'd get here.)
Also keep in mind that if you are an American citizen you will have double tax liabilities - both to the UK as well as Uncle Sam. European taxes are typically higher than that in US
You pay no US tax up to 90k once living abroad and most of the taxes you pay while in London can be returned as long as you’re not there for more than 6 years.
Thanks all for your responses. I've heard the same, but can't help but feel that's it's all anecdotal. Anyone actually know anyone that's gone through with going to the UK then? It can't be that bad...
I know many that work in the UK. The picture depicted above sounds like market. If you manage to get your company to pay you 2x market rate then please share with the thread as I’ll try to apply learnings for future negotiations 😉
Why would anyone move over to the UK from the US then? What the hell...?
So... Given the taxes, lower market rate, what should be a realistic number I should be asking for?
Using my mental model: Labour market discount: ~25-30% Exchange rate: ~.7 GBP/USD Assuming gross comp is staying relatively similar but with the above applied: ~£200-220k Could probably bump up to £230-250k TC though.
13 percent more than $420K ? LOL.
I mean... Serious question. I keep hearing about lower pay when moving abroad.
It is totally different base pay. Forget about US comp when thinking about Europe
