I think about moving to Seattle and joining FB.
Currently L5 in the Bay, about 340k TC.
FB offers E5 at 185/630/50.
With cheaper cost of living & no state tax that should be another 25% comp bump on top of the FB offer. So approx like if I got 500k in the Bay.
Can afford a home.
Now, the question is where to buy?
I don’t like overcrowded dirty cities. Don’t mind commuting from the Eastside.
Zip 98033 seems like a perfect still affordable location between Google Kirkland (if I don’t like FB and come back), Oculus Redmond (if I decide to try VR domain) and MS HQ (just in case), with short commute to Bellevue downtown and SLU via 520.
Bellevue is the popular choice in Eastside for clean and great living environment + jobs + education.
Bellevue has several areas. Clyde hill is the most expensive one which has Bellevue high school (lots of rich people) and with great view. You may not afford here to have a good size house. Somerset is very popular particularly for education because of New Port high school which has nation’s top orchestra and has higher academic scores. Somerset has lots of old houses in the hill. 1.2-1.5M will get you 1,800-2800sqft houses with some yard but they are mostly built in 1960s. Lakemont is farther away (exit 13 at I90). They don’t have many apartments and most of the houses are over 3,000 sqft. This is the best target probably with adequate commute to Seattle with good size house yet not too expensive. You need 1.3-1.6M to live here as there are no small houses but the house will guarantee the life you dreamt of. Great neighborhood with stable jobs (doctors, dentists or double income engineers). Their elementary school is very good however the school district is not Bellevue. They belong to Issaquah school district which is still great but Lakemont sends to Issaquah high school which is weaker than other high school in Issaquah (Skyline). But school academics change when demographics change and that is what is happening. These are the areas considered great in general in Bellevue.
Closer to Redmond, Sammamish high school and Interlake high school are considered bad by this area standard. Interlake has highly capable program so if your child is in the program, it probably does not matter.
In general, you can’t go wrong in above mentioned districts (Bellevue, Lake washington and Issaquah) - lots of techies but safe and great academics.
One more thing is by being in Bellevue and Lake washington, your child will have a chance to go to nation’s top 50 high schools - Tesla high and International. Redmond has great houses with suburban feel with access to 520. It may look far but a few miles at 520 or I90 don’t make too much difference as traffic jam does not start until you go closer to the lake. Education hill in Redmond has many 3,000 sqft houses at 1.3-1.6M. There are many Amazonians living there as well.
If you want bigger houses and can stand long commute, Sammamish is the best area. If you take a look at the average house hold income, not even bay area can beat this city (145k compared to 90k in Bellevue and Redmond). It has many big houses with lots of new construction. 1.4M will get you 4,000 sqft houses. New construction is just 150k plus. All the schools in this area are great (yes, there is not a single bad school). However, it may look too suburban for some.
