Hello all, Recently got offers from several companies in Seattle and two stands out. I was wondering if you all can help me consider the offers. For Amazon L5: 154k Base, 132k signon(over 2years), 200k stock(over 4 years, 5% 15% 40% 40%) Forgot which team âŒ240k TC per year For MSFT IC62: 150k Base, 80k signon(over 1year), 200k stock(over 4years, 25% each year) New team with interesting technology âŒ220k TC per year My question is which offer would you pick and why? I'm also thinking about work life balance and future growth opportunities. From money perspective I'd go with amazon but I heard L5 life is super hectic at amazon. And msft has better Work life balance.
Create a poll. Donât forget that you will have ~10% cash bonus with Microsoft + better benefits.
Yep, cash bonus at Microsoft with such close offers is pretty much the deal breaker. Throw in the ESPP and the Microsoft offer is looking better and better. Generally Amazon offers tend to be âbetterâ than others because of the insane stock growth. But MS is doing well as well. They also have significantly better promotion process. With the offers that close, MS is the better pick.
With benefits, MS beat banana club easily.
If it were me, Iâd use that amazon offer to up my TC for Microsoft or at least really bump up that sign on bonus. The vesting schedule for amazon is pretty rough and kinda kills your flexibility imo
Good idea I tried but msft didn't care to match a bit. Told by recruiter the team thinks it's a strong offer
Ah gotchu, if you end up knowing for sure which offer you want to accept, definitely throw a Hail Mary at the end. Ex: âIâll accept right now if we can meet at x sign on bonusâ There are some good negotiation guides out there for future reference. https://candor.co/guides/salary-negotiation Good luck man, let us know how it goes! Hope I can be in your shoes one day :)
Comes down to manager and org at Amazon - it can be great and I would take it if I knew those two things and did enough checking. If not, Microsoft.
How would you suggest checking those two things? As someone who's not in amazon yet.
I look them up on LinkedIn and look for recommendations and red flags. Good nice flags are like been at Amazon a while, been a sde, got promoted at least twice, came from another FAANG, etc. Managers that are shady and pip for no reason can have strikes issued against them by HR (if their victims got smart) and can get fired and not promoted - it collects over time. They often do not last long despite Amazon favoring managers. What did the talk with your HM sound like? Surely, before you got the offer you must have gotten good or bad vibes. Friendliness?
Don't be fooled by the large amazon signon, consider Total Target Comp, you won't get any refreshers for 4 years even if you're eligible. There is no cash bonus, and their low 401k match vests after 3 years. If you plan to jump off after 4 years consider Amazon, otherwise don't.
Quick question, how could you be eligible for refresher and still not getting it at amazon? I am a bit confused
Basically you wonât get any refreshers beyond your initial grant unless you get promoted. The 5th and 3rd year cliffs at Amazon can be massive unless your rated TT or get promoted in the first 2 years, which is hard to do from L5 to L6.
msft easily
Don't join Amazon you'll regret it here.

How's your work life balance? Anything anecdotal is fine.
Growth, as in just stock wise or career wise too?
