I got an Instacart (Canada) offer, TC 420k (CAD) as SWE (L6). Earlier this week I went onsite with Facebook, and today the recruiter told me that FB is going to offer me Production Engineer (IC5) for the Menlo Park office (will get a concrete number tomorrow). It was a bittersweet moment because I'm conflicted. On one hand, I do like the scope of work for PE and given it's FB, lots of opportunity to work with high scale systems. I've never worked at a FAANG company before and I hate to miss out on this opportunity. On the other hand, moving from Canada to California is a huge change. I'm in my late 30s with wife and 2 kids (3 and 7 yo). On top of that, we just bought a house... At this point my heart says FB, as the work is more interesting to me, and I always liked California weather, but my head says just stick to IC as their offer is good considering it's Canada. According to levels.fyi, IC5 at FB is about 350k (USD) in TC. If that's accurate, I don't think it's worth the hassle of dragging the whole family across the continent given the exorbitant house price in the Bay Area (and as someone who lives in the Greater Toronto Area I know ridiculous house prices).
No amount would get you the bay area weather throughout the year. Except for yearly wild 🔥 which are in few Hotspots but if you can get a decent pay that beats IC offer my vote is for FB for the location n opportunities that are abundant if not FB.
Yeah, the weather and the scenery are main attractions for me. I've been to the Bay Area many times and always enjoyed my stay there. Look, I love Canada, but the long winters are getting old :)
@ OP, your 💙 wants to move to bay area but your 🧠 is looking at financials ... choose what is best for long-term..if you are native to canada you know what you missed till now being in cold place. decide wisely and all the best!!
Instacart. Not sure about the future of the company, but the Bay Area is way too costly for families (housing as well as private schooling) and work life’s hyper competitive at FB.
Thanks for the insight!
Don’t come. I understand the name means a lot, but it’s not worth it. Take instacart, the stock price may go so high at IPO you’ll probably be a millionnaire. Bay Area isn’t worth it
Thanks for the insight!
Instacart. If the IPO trend continues, you’ll make much more. Not counting lower COL, no relocation with family, etc
Instacart!!!
Don’t come, you have a family and home. 400k TC is insane in Canada, congrats!
Just curious, what TC in the Bay Area would be comparable to 420k CAD in Canada?
Probably 550+ USD, which is L6 at FB.
Wow, instakart might go 🚀, Op, yoe ?
12.5 officially, but no FAANG experience before, so YOE might get discounted..
Which role are you moving to ?
don’t move. you’ll fucking hate it. but didn’t FB just commit to full remote?
Not that I know of. The recruiter said I'll have to relocate (presumably anywhere in the US, since the office is closed) before I can start.
Congrats and take the instacart offer. Also how did you prepare for the interviews?
For Instacart? Honestly, the coding part weren't hard. Maybe LC easy to easy-medium. One of them is a bit harder that's maybe LC hard-medium. I didn't prepare well enough for behavioural, which is why I think they down-levelled me (interviewed at Staff level). For Facebook, PE interviews are pretty intense. 5 rounds, and every round is different. IMO, they're a lot more knowledge-based, e.g., knowledge about networking and system internals. One coding round, but pretty straightforward. System design round is slightly harder. I think I did better on behavioural at FB due to some preparation.
Thanks. Preparing for data engineer roles and will reach out to you for referral if you join instacart.
