Hey everyone, about to start my new job as an APM at an extremely fast-growing startup (fintech). Really nervous as I have always wanted to go into PM but only really got the courage to go for it after being mistreated at my current company as a Tech Support Engineer.

Background: 20 y.o., B.Eng in SWE, graduated Jan 2021. Interned at places as SWE, didnt like it, took the tech support job in March and will be starting the APM job next month.

    Congrats.

Be confident, build trust, and enjoy the journey.

Focus on understanding the problems you're solving and jobs to be done before diving into solutions (with your team).

Learn as much as can about the product (What does it do well, what is lacking, how does it compare to competitive products? How does Sales talk about the product? How does the product enable the company vision and mission?).

Learn who are the go-to people for every part of the company. Put 15-20 minutes on the calendar with these people to build relationships and better understand how they rely on the product org. Your manager should be a good resource for identifying these people.

As a junior in your career and on the team, learn how you can best support your team with your existing skill set and experience. As you gain credibility, you'll go from being a support system to a thought partner.

Learn, learn, learn — about the market and about your practice (read books - Inspired by Marty Cagan is a good place to start).

  • Be confident, prepare well before your meetings, slowly build rapport, figure out who the key people are and be humble

find some PM mentors inside and outside your company and meet often. don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for help. be very clear about expectations with your manager and team. don’t assume you know what peoples roles are or what they expect you to do - ask often. because PM roles vary from company and team widely and not everyone has the same understanding of what constitutes success for you. often for PMs the people you work with all expect different and conflicting things from you. understand that and manage it, prioritizing your managers goals and what will make you and your team successful.
