One of my closest coworkers at work has really severe depression. He's quite quiet so not a lot of people are aware, but he's told me about it somewhat, and whenever we talk the sign of depression are there. Members of my family have struggled with anxiety and depression so I'm quite familiar with what it could look like -- and I'm quite sure that he is struggling. He usually takes medication for it on a daily basis, but lately I've noticed stopped taking his meds entirely, and it's impacting both his mental health and his work. Should I inform his manager about it? I've approached him personally about it but I'm not sure I'm able to push him to get the help he needs.

What does everyone think? What's the best way to support him?

Do NOT tell the manager. It’s up to your friend to make that decision. I’d recommend telling your friend about the changes you notice and that you are concerned. Ask if there is anything you can do to help.

  • Telling his manager without talking to him about it first could jeopardize any trust you guys built, so I’d say talk to him about it before doing anything else. If he’s not comfortable sharing this information, sharing it could hurt him more than help him..

Usually people who take these kinds of meds regularly meet with some sort of doctor/ psychiatrist and the doctor should be asking them how they feel the meds are working (or not working). The are lots of different kinds of meds for depression and people react more positively to some than others. Your coworker needs to talk about this to their doctor and either up there dosage or try a different medicine completely. You should try and convince your coworker of this. Most likely if they are quiet in general, they are probably quiet with their doctor as well
