I work in entertainment pr in LA. My boss often reprimands me for things I cannot control. The sky is blue and he wants me to make it pink in 2 minutes. He gets really short with me and raises his voice if I make a small mistake or even ask a question. example: he tells me a phone number to write down, I repeat it back to him and he asks me if I am dumb and didn’t write down the number when I am just trying to confirm if it is correct. Is this normal in entertainment? Am I not cut out for this industry?
GTFO
Not normal in any scenario or industry. He is just a-hole and you should report to HR.
What if there is no HR and this is the president of the company?
No. HR exists to protect the boss and the company. Reporting your boss to HR is about the dumbest thing you can do. In this situation you start interviewing elsewhere.
Hi op, I’m glad you asked this. I believe it might be LA culture for management to behave in this manner, but in no way does that make it healthy, justifiable or less harmful. I have experienced this first hand at a mktg company that deals directly with media/entertainment, so I definitely empathize with this. It is abusive and toxic. I have decided to take some time away from the industry as well as LA to see if other environments and coworkers/managers suit me better. My recommendation would be to immediately let your concerns be known to someone that would be able to help. If the problem persists after an intervention, I would recommend finding a new job. However, I would mention at every future interview that respect is one of your key values you’re looking for in a company because it aligns with how you want to be treated and it’s something you value. I hope it gets better. I know it’ll all work out for the best!
Fire your boss. Have some ba$$s
Leave
Op, What did you end up doing?
People like that have emotional problems. Probably has Napoleon syndrome or a small penis.
Hi! Used to work in advertising and post production in LA. Media / Entertainment hierarchies are terribly toxic and unhealthy. They largely fit the definition of 'sick systems'. Your boss sounds like he needs to have his head bounced off some concrete - his actions sound particularly egregious. In Media you can certainly expect to be asked to do the impossible without necessary resources...and asked to work endless overtime and weekends without pay...but to be demeaned in this way is not 'normal' in my experience. Fuck this guy. Leave tomorrow.

How can I find success dating in NYC
Fuck that! You are asking the wrong question. The guy is toxic and you don't want to spend any more time around his abuse. My point is, even if it is normal, why would want to destroy yourself? Please find another job
Thank you. I almost feel like I am crazy to think this is normal and I should just accept this. He does this and then comes and tells me a joke at my desk 15 min later like nothing happens. I feel terrible about myself for the rest of the day.
He is abusive and manipulative.
