My pay has gone down, accounting for inflation.

Dec 13, 2018 50 Comments

SWE

Year 1, 1 year prior YOE 71k
Year 2, 1% raise, 71.7k
Year 3, 1.2% raise, 72.5k
Year 4, .7% raise, 73k

I bust my ass at work. Long hours. Always ensure our customers are happy. Always taking on more responsibility and succeeding. No promo. No decent raises. Always told “there’s no room in the budget”. We’ve had record breaking company performance every year.

Since 2014 cumulative inflation means 71000 is the same spending power as 75589 this year.

I’ve lost spending power due to these poor raises. How do I cope! I feel worthless working here.

You already know the answer. Find a new job that will pay and treat you better.
I left my last job because I didn’t get RSU refreshers.
Why still loyal to intel bud?

Uh... what? How much of that is pure luck driven by the stock price?

Calling bullshit on 140k to 380k in 4 years without changing companies.

I think it would get a lot tougher for my coworkers. I can’t do that to them. It’s not rating, it’s just taking pride in my work.

We are all adults here. Your coworkers can decide for themselves. You're not really helping them as much as you are the company.

Busting long hours at Intel. I feel it's not culture fit, and hence you aren't growing. Work less, prepare for interviews, leave asap.

Those aren't really even raises. We call those cost of living adjustments. Companies justifies it as staying with inflation.

You might as work for government at those numbers, they have step increases for seniority like this.

If you're busting your ass for real, you need to leave. I would've left after 2 review cycles tops if this happened. Waiting for 4 years doesn't make any sense. It's obvious they either don't value you or you do barely passable work. This is a hot market for SWEs, if you aren't getting at least 10% raises at that salary range now, you're doing something wrong.

It’s not even. COL adjustment. It’s below COL

    • Cruise Automation mocca
It's what company calls it, doesn't mean that it's actual COL. The amount is usually 1% if job level hasn't changed. Sometimes 2%.
