My take on future of job roles in tech.. Whats yours?

I am a 25-year old SWE and i have been thinking about future of tech jobs lately. I intend to be in the industry for next 20-25 years. These are my views on the tech industry as a whole and the sectoral jobs in that time horizon - Software Engineering - Web based development : I think the overall demand might decrease. For someone who wants to open a startup, it makes better sense (financially and stress-wise) today to go for a SAAS option (like AWS or GCP) than hire an engineering team. I think more and more “cloud architects & firms” will come up for architecting such systems and taking the operational burden from the startup. These firms will require SWEs but compared to last decade, the demand will be less as most of the operational burden are already automated. - On-device development : There is more focus on on-device computing and the devices these days comes with pretty badass compute power (take Apple M1 chip for example) . So more and more apps will move their computations offline driving demand for this sector - AI/ML Engineering : With AutoML and SAAS offerings, ML engineering requirement at a startup will be less. But big tech firms like Amazon or Google might need more of these engineers as more and more online and on-device offerings rely on this. So probably the demand will be slowly increasing. - Engineering Management : As per above points, demand of EMs in big companies will remain but I think in small and mid-companies, the number of job roles will be less. - Quantum computing : I think that error corrected quantum computers are bit far. May be towards the end of 20 years, we might see a cloud offering from Google or IBM or Amazon. In initial days, the application will be restricted to solving high computation problems like medicine discovery etc and slowly getting adopted in mainstream tasks in 30-40 years. - Product/Program management : I think this will keep increasing in the same pace as last decade as these involve stakeholder management and business decisions (which AI may not be able to take over fully). So companies (even if they are outsourcing the technical aspect to consultancies or SAAS companies) will need some one to manage the project, come up with new business use-cases and effectively drive it to. completion. This involves lot of “unknowns” and randomness. I think in that angle, these jobs seems future-proof. - Trading/Positional investing : Seems like AI bots will be much better in this and now itself we are seeing AI driven funds and HFT systems. - Value investing : As this involves rating leadership capability of the company’s management (which is not easily quantifiable), i think some human intervention will be required . so AI cant take over fully in this. So I think AI-assisted value investment is here to stay - UX/product research+design - Research : UX/product research involves talking with people, understanding their core problems and bring out insights. I dont think AI may have tht level of capability (I might be wrong!!). So I think this job sector is secure - Design : I think AI will do a better job in this. We have seen many times, that given constraints, AI can figure creative ways out. So if the requirements are fixed, then AI will be able to design the most optimal solution. Therefore I think UX/Product design jobs may decline. Happy to hear from you guys on your take on these. #tech #career #productdesign #productmanagement #ai #ui/ux #investment EDIT: Adding thoughts on additional job roles mentioned in comments: - Business analytics : I think demand will recede because now itself AI can do statistical inferences very well and probably given a data set or research data, it should be able to find some meaningful pattern. - Legal team : Seems like in short term, demand will be high due to privacy. and data breach issues. But looking into long-term, on-device computations might bring down such issues

Business Analytics?

Added, Feel free to comment your thoughts as well. I am trying to understand if there are any alternate line of thinking

Good Post I wonder about this all the time most SWEs I have met are under 40.

Good post OP! Will add my thoughts once I process this in my head.

I feel PM and UX will combine. What you mentioned there about design with respect to AI is more UI focused. . but business thinking will evolve & PMs would be cross disciplinary storytellers & vision officers and designers would become facilitators of human centered design for complex interdisciplinary problems (not UI focused.. more like service design, domain complexity solutioning etc) - my 2 cents : open to discussion

I agree with you. It makes sense to combine those two roles if UI design is not involved. A PM with strong business knowledge and human-centered thinking will be pretty secure

Legal? I think there isnt much in actual lawyery stuff and people will JD(losers without skills) will dirty the corporate world. By putting in useless policies. PS: with all those tech advancement and no touch decision making, we will still need a throat to choke incase things go south.

Amazon Hel2o_Jef2 OP Jun 8, 2021

I was just focussing on roles which I deal with everyday in Amazon. Ya. legal will be required given the aspects of privacy and data breaches which we are seeing nowadays. But I think on-device processing will bring down those issues probably. Chime in with your thoughts !

Missed a big one... Security

Amazon Hel2o_Jef2 OP Jun 8, 2021

Forgot about that 😅. I think security will remain stable as on-device and web based applications needs to be security certified. Don't have any evidence to believe its demand will drastically increase or decrease

If Amazon automates machines to write code how do they PIP the machine

Amazon Hel2o_Jef2 OP Jun 8, 2021

They retrain the models 😂

Amdocs dylan69 Jun 9, 2021

They will throw the machines out of the window

What about leetcode🤔🤔🤔

Amazon TopTierMe Jun 8, 2021

What about backend? You know where software runs and doesn't fail.
