Career switch?

Sep 23, 2021 5 Comments

I'm doing FW work at WD. Have a decent experience/confidence on C++. I'm having health and family issues, so thinking ahead if I should switch to SW jobs which would give me more work flexibility/WFHs in the future.

For tech veterans, does it make sense to switch? I'm in my 30s and afraid to complete with 20 something single people with 500 LCs done in interviews. I'm not aiming FAANG companies either. Do I stand a chance?

People who voted for SW, C++ is ok or should switch to python to widen my area of expertise?

Thanks

I was in a similar boat, I had been doing a lot of firmware and embedded systems and wanted to move to SW to get a WFH job more easily. I'm in my 30's, with a kid and did less than 200 LC, received FAANG offers.

Just to note I actually did better with FAANG interviews because they look for generalists in some roles and won't reject you because you don't use Django/rails/other random framework. Facebook's team selection is awesome for switching domains to, you'll basically get to pick your team, you can find something in C++ that's software to help bridge the gap.

Your real difficulty is going to be in system design since you've been in embedded systems. You'll need to prep there for distributed systems.
