I joined Microsoft 3 months ago from Oracle. I consistently put ~45 hours and we are working on cutting edge stuff. I am in Azure ML. I keep hearing about the so called MSFT "country club" in blind but it seems like a myth or maybe I am missing something. How is 45 hour work week a country club? Our Team uses C#, C++, Python, Node and all these are industry standards. I have only worked at Oracle before and Microsoft seems like an amazing company. // end of my rant!
You'll find that most people on blind who post a lot are just trolls. The majority of us seem quite happy with Microsoft. It's a big enough company that you can find boring backwaters if you look for them, but by and large, I've been really impressed with how fun this place can be for such a large company. Welcome!
I am a troll and I endorse this message
Thanks for sharing. What teams do you think are the most cutting edge right now?
Azure is a great place to work. Most of the negativity on Blind comes from a certain set of ppl who have been deadwood for ages and now feel left out. Thank God! It's a small section of the company
Coming in at 9 and leaving at 6 with no night/weekend work sound pretty nice for the fat paychecks we get. Ask an Amazonian who is crying at his desk.
Worked at Amazon. No one cries at their desk.
I’m on an ML group at Amazon and everyone works 10-6 or less...
Yea it’s all nonsense. I’m sure there are some jobs at microsoft where you don’t have to work too hard. It’s a big company. But overall people work hard. It’s nothing like Blind has you believe. But even so, is having a good work life balance a BAD thing? 23 year old trolls that don’t understand life should not shape your perception of the industry.
Consider this: 1) 4 years+ into its run, Azure ML and all of Joseph's teams are still promises. They do cool demos and POCs, but have no 24/7 customers betting on them. So, no on-call like in the FANG companies, which simply cannot stop. 2) Due to "1", the monetization strategy is fluffy at the least, and deceiving at the worst interpretation. See all the threads about the RIF on sales, MCS, etc. Azure is getting money from afraid CIOs who just left IBM, and don't understand that they are not really saving anything, but just paying for bundled services they don't use. 3) So, you are likely doing 45+ hours out of your own volition. Look around and you will see lots of colleagues doing 30 hours. Others stay in office for 40 hours, paying bills, scheduling family activities, investing on the stock market or, mainly, preparing for interviews outside. Wake up and enjoy the country club while you can.
Lemme get this straight. You work at a top tier company, get paid really well, work on cutting edge tech and you’re complaining about average hours?
I don’t think he’s complaining about his situation. He’s pointing out that the people (mostly here on Blind) that look down on Microsoft as a “country club” are full of if.
Country club is NOT for people who joined 3 months ago. We'll invite you once you get tenured
Nice, sounds fun! What kind of cutting edge stuff are you working on
I am in Azure ML. We work closely with ML gurus and MSR. Our orgs broader vision is to democratize AI for general public.
Wtf does that mean. Marketing mumbo jumbo
