Engineering Manager role in either NVIDIA AV Team or Waymo. TC now is $710k. Which has the best culture and working environment (inc WLB)? Bay Area.

I work in AV (Santa Clara). Don't come here. The overall culture is good, but we are HORRIBLE at SW development (just look at the shitshow which is called Nvidia linux drivers). AV org is like a dog chasing its own tail.
I had a chat with a Waymo recruiter once, there weren't any good matches, but I felt the work there was much more precisely planned out.
Here you wake up one day, hear that Jensen has called for a demo, you have to put everything on hold, and prepare a demo with a lot of patchwork and workarounds. After the demo is done, all the patchwork get merged into the mainline code and nobody spends the time to fix stuff properly.

There's a discrepancy between what the CEO of NVIDIA professes from the stage about WLB and reality. His sermon is: everyone can work when she wants and how much she wants, go on vacation any time she wants for as long as she wants. The reality: 60-80 hours a week, the manager used to call my colleagues (before the virus) to check if I am in the cubicle, tell me that WFH is a privilege I must earn (without any clear path to earning).

Don’t come to NVIDIA. It is a very poorly managed company which sucks at SW and launching products. Great GPUs but shit SW. Also everyone walks around with their dick out so the loudest person in the room gets heard (not logic, not technical knowledge). Don’t make the mistake of joining NV!

My managers keep boasting how they used to do the work 10 years ago so understand everything there is to know today, and, for the future.

What goes on in my head is that 10 years ago we were using CDs, and before that, floppy, zip disks.... So yeah dicks out.

CDs 10 years ago? Common. Btw, how did they use to do work 10 years ago? 🤔☺️
