Fb, google and many other are banned in China. It is only fair that the world bans Chinese companies.

    • It might be fair, but that does not make it legal under the US Constitution. The quickest path to success would be to somehow convince the App Store and Google Play to stop carrying it. Even that strategy might be vulnerable to an antitrust suit. Good luck .

  • Anybody who thinks the Chinese government wonโ€™t use Tiktok to promote videos to specific groups that have content that supports whatever it is they want to see happen in the US (more internal conflict? Trump lose? Trump win? More favorable trade ? Etc ) is naรฏve.

That said, I donโ€™t see how the White House can legally forbid a company from making it available on their App Store, or ppl downloading , or block specific IP addresses that TikTok uses, etc.

Most they could do is lobby Congress to pass a law (good luck) that would try and do these things (and probably be found 1st amendment unconstitutional, or leave work arounds or loop holes open. .

    • It is easy for the Federal government, which has a lot of control at border crossings and is empowered by congress to place hardware under ITAR and EAR (export) restrictions without additional congressional approval, to cut off the flow of hardware to a place outside of the country. They could also stop certain algorithms or coding tools from being exported...but not importation of a piece of software.

If Congress passed a sanctions law, that could forbid Apple and Google from receiving payments from ByteDance, and that *might* be enough for them to pull it from their app stores, but the Feds can't do that without Congress .

If Apple and Google opted to host the app anyway because it is popular, I do not think the US government would have much recourse. They could create regulations about that might be obeyed for a while until the challenge worked its way through the courts, but chances are the first level of federal court would quickly approve an injunction while the case was argued through the court system, since not doing so would clearly cause immediate damage to ByteDance. Likewise with a law, which would be hard to write to be loophole proof

Read about the hardware restrictions on Huawei. Even that was not simple and loopsholes are found etc. With software, it is going to be even harder.
