Any engineers working at NASA or Space X who transferred from Facebook or Google? Would love to know how the life is at there comparatively? Super fascinated with all the work down there :)
NASA is a great place to work with solid benefits. SpaceX, not so much. This is based on a lot of feedback I've read on Blind and friends experiences. Anecdotally, I interviewed with SpaceX and had an offer. The pay is considerably lower than what you'll get at FAANG type employers. The interviewers weren't shy in admitting that the work life balance is bad (70+ minimum). Some enjoy it because they're *that* passionate about the mission but it seemed most weren't happy.
Yeah that sounds like what I have heard. But as long as people like the work it should be good :) thanks for the reply!
Work life balance is much better than what it used to be like 4ish years ago. The pay is much lower than Silicon Valley salaries though
The work must be very satisfying though.
Launch Engineer here at SlaveX work life balance is worse than it was 4 years ago. Typicaly work 13-14hr a day 6 days a week. Talent & experience quites faster than they are replaced. Just waiting for my last vesting(funny autocorrect wants to replace this word with "beating")
That sucks. Most of the stories I have heard where this is the case it is almost always managements fault ( not to be confused with the execs). Our attrition rate in engineering was so bad that they had no choice but to require less hours or risk having no experience engineers left to do the work. I have been working 50hr weeks for the past year or more and couldn’t be happier. My first year in 2012 I was working 80-100hr weeks almost regularly.
I interned two summers at Google, the became full time contractor at NASA. the work is less hype driven; no one gives a damn if you use the latest framework. More experienced people; google seemed like a lot of bright coders but still a sea of 20s aged. NASA is located in places I can buy houses, Google typically is not.
Are you still a contractor? What location? I am currently applying and wanted to know if anyone had insight on jobs.
