My recruiter said google has moved to team specific hiring. So no more team matching and less downlevel as the team may need resource at specific level you have applied.

Can anyone confirm? Or is it BS?

EDIT:
Seems I wasn't clear enough. Now downlevel will result into reject more often as the team may not need anyone at that level.

Team level matching is true but down level part doesn’t make sense.. you could still totally be down leveled

Why would you ever accept to be down leveled? I rejected Google offers in the past because they wanted to down level me. I would probably be fine with a few % salary cut, you can easily recoup that overtime, but it’s much harder to get promoted. So either way, one should never accept to be down leveled if you are confident about your skills and your experience.

Sure, everything is possible. Just don’t count on it. You will find that a good % of what goes into the promotion process is politics and networking. Performance matters, but that probably counts for a 50% . I have seen top performers not being promoted just because the project they worked on didn’t go anywhere, their manager didn’t have enough political weight to push for their promotion, their org was dismantled etc … so keep that in mind as well.

On the other hand, if Google is the only option you have, I would probably consider it anyway. And if you don’t get a promotion within max couple of years you will have much easier time moving to another FAANG with a better offer.

  • You will still get downleveled depending on interview performance. They won’t hire you at a certain level if you don’t perform just because the position asks for it.

Should I proactivly communicate if I am willing to take a downlevel if I am not a good match? Or should I wait for the process to end?

If you work at a company where the levels are inflated (start up levels are inflated, as with many no named companies), then the “down level” is meaningless.

Look at your current TC, and the TC they’re offering with expected refresh/bonus. For all we know, you’re getting up-leveled…

Also, you’re making 120k. You won’t ever get “down leveled” as G as their lowest offer is much higher than that
