Google L4 offer

Oct 1, 2020 28 Comments

My recruiter called today to inform HC passed, he asked if I want to discuss compensation. I said I need to do my homework first (my mind went blank, was just rejected FB E5 with a good interview feedback) He then gave me a very concrete number saying that is what he can approve right away and suggest to use it as a starting point

Seattle
base 134K
rsu 126k 4yrs

I am confused if this what HC decided? This is like < 99.9% of L4 ( confirmed no down level). #swe #software

YOE: 4
TC: 210K

  • Ask for at least 180k base plus 500k RSU / 4yr, plus 50k sign on.

    • It's pretty useful since eng is the larger function.

And it's median, not average so lower nontech salaries won't drag this down.

It’s definitely not. I’d be surprised if even 1/4 of the company was eng. Big companies have huge amounts of sales, customer service, marketing, etc. Even at LinkedIn engineering is maybe like 35-40% of the company.

  • That's a hard low ball. Do your homework and tell the recruiter the range you are genuinely looking for (don't go for some crazy high number thinking that you'd end up meeting in the middle for your expectations). Just stay firm on your expected range and be ready to walk away, this is truly a disrespectful offer.

    • There’s nothing respectful or disrespectful about the offer. It’s called business. HR is not there to maximize your TC. They’re there to bring the β€œbest” candidate for the lowest TC. If you feel you’re worth more, make a counter offer. If they accept, good. If they don’t accept, it’s obvious that they don’t think your employment with them is worth that much. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but it’s all about supply and demand.

    Damn, that's low.
I believe it comes out to $185k TC after factoring in target bonus.

I started at $240k last year (Seattle L4). Had two competing offers. Will be at $275 for 2021 after factoring in refreshers and stock appreciation.

You will not have a lot of leverage without competing offers. You can try anchoring high by demanding $300k but will likely not work.

HC does not decide comp. HR does.
