In some companies such as Facebook or Google, product maketing team has a responsibility to do in bound research that feeds into product management. I understand that is market research.

How does market research differ with user research (I am not referring to user experience researchers who typically research the design, etc).

What people buy isn’t the same as what they use.

    Key Questions.

Market research: What will consumers buy? How can we get them to buy it? How do we position this in the market?

User research: What makes a product or service useful? How do consumers use it? What are unmet consumer/user needs? What features or attributes do we need in order to make the product useful (not just buyable)?

Admittedly this is an over-simplified definition. The fields have a lot of similarities and overlap, and complement each other.

Market research is about trying to understand how a new product of service will be received. for example Microsoft going out and interviewing 100s of gamers and trying to see what do gamers want if we asked them to buy 200 dollar game console. Market research gives you perspective on how you should position your product in order to meet the needs of your customer better.

User research is happens when the new xbox has been made and now you want to give a beta product to them to see how they use the new xbox.

User researchers do more than beta tests. Their role is to understand user behavior with products or services and to discover unmet user needs. This may involve usability testing once a product is prototyped or, on the front end, discovering user/customer problems worth solving. This may involve talking with customers (interviews), analyzing call center logs, surveys, and more.

User Experience (UX) researchers and User Researchers are the same thing. The titles are used interchangeably. In other companies they are also called “Design Researchers”. Often this denotes the organization/department they report to (e.g., the Design org).

Would you do market research for features that are proven by others in industry or just implement if there is learnings from industry/peer companies. For example, Apply pay is becoming a new norm as a checkout option on ecommerce site. If you decided to implement apple pay at your company, would you do primary research first or just implement it based on the fact that it’s proven to reduce friction in checkout process by others in the industry?
