By Cal you mean Bay Area? Pros: career, pay Cons: cost of living (lifestyle), stressful (living)
Career: NY - very diverse with respect to options; FAANG, banking, some govt, fairly decent number of start ups. Some cons are the work culture itself is a bit uptight although that’s slowly changing. Also FAANG and similar while they have offices in NYC the work may not be as fulfilling as the HQ work. California: assuming BA, tons of start up and mature commercial options. Laid back work environments. Pay is gonna be fairly similar between the two; both pay top tier TCs in general but it really comes down to your individual situation and company. Both states have insane tax rates but I would say your taxes go further towards direct impact in NYC wrt public transit being pretty solid and super cheap. Living and lifestyle; NYC depending on TC NYC offers some of the best food and night life in the world and as with what you can expect out of a city of 8m endless things to do. Also if you’re a single guy the odds are in your favor. CA: laid back, and plenty of outdoors activities from the beach to hiking. Dating is probably a bit harder here. Personally I like NYC over BA but for most it’s a toss up regarding what you value
Have lived in both. California has weather, NY has life. Lol Depends on what kind of lifestyle you want. Both are expensive AF (SF specifically is way more expensive than NYC, but you can find other places in the Bay that are more comparable price wise). Career-wise also depends on your goals: at my company, for instance, it’s harder to move up in the ranks compared to being in the thick of the action at headquarters.
