Need Advise and Feedback - New Grad Software Engineer

Jul 7, 2020 11 Comments

Hi Everyone, I hope you guys are all safe.

I graduated in May 2020 and have a Bachelor's in Software Engineering. I have been emailing and messaging recruiters on Linkedin while also applying if I see any job posting. But mainly I am emailing or messaging recruiters on Linkedin cuz there aren't many job posting available right now. I am mainly interested in getting into FAANG but also open to other roles. I want to work in the US, so I need to apply to companies that can sponsor me.

This is what I have been writing in my emails when I email recruiters, please advise me if I need to add or remove anything from my email. Please note, English is not my first language and I suck at writing.

I have attached my resume where you can find more detailed information regarding my background. Hoping to hear from you soon.

If anyone here can refer me (I can send you my resume) or advise me in terms of what else I should do to land a job before September. I will really appreciate it. Thank you!!

  • Try applying to jobs first and then contacting the recruiters and include the job ID and title that you applied. If you contact them through LinkedIn include the email that you used to apply.

  • Honestly, recruiters are out there in the market to find a candidate that fits their requirement which are mostly specific ( like years of experience, technology etc.), as a fresher (all of us were a fresher at one time), reaching out to a recruiter may or may not help but applying online directly to 0-1 y experience roles have more chances.

I just wanted to share my 2 cents. I have done it a lot and rarely heard from a good company, rather I was contacted by consultancies. Applying directly has helped me. Apply as many applications as you can.

    • Thank you so much for your advice, I am actively looking for postings, but they are not open right now. Hopefully, it will open up soon. Also, another reason I am reaching out to recruiters directly is that I think my resume is not making it them because of their automated parsing. That is why I am applying to postings available but also emailing them.

    • Yeah, keep doing that, it does not harm anyway, change it a little bit though. Do whatever needs to be done professionally.

      I wish you good luck!

For the email, highlight what you achieved in the internship i.e. outcomes. If a recruiter has 30 seconds to read and decide whether to call you they don't want to go now open the resume to find that info. Also, give that overview earlier; you can edit out 'why I'm reaching out to you etc.'. they are a recruiter after all. DM me if you want more help editing and refining this message.

  • Also, you need to make your email subject as eye catcher , something like:
    Just checkin in,
    In the market,
Checking back on the opportunity etc.

Apart from that, change your email format to more of a bullet specific points than a letter format, be specific about what are you looking for, and what you can offer. Also a contact number highlighted. And of course a one page resume.
