Two specific areas I’m trying to get better:
- when challenged in team discussions while presenting my ideas. most of the time I don’t have the time to prepare in advance, but need to think quickly, and frame the answers. I don’t do this quickly enough and conversation control gets yanked.

- framing concise replies to people who are not involved with the technical details.

(non-native English speaker, introvert, x-factor: socially inept)

    1) you don't have to be the smartest person in the room.
    2) speech is silver, silence is gold. unless you feel compelled to raise your point, don't.
    3) observe how others manage and train yourself into that frame of mind.
    4) most importantly, keep it simple, concise, precise. don't stress.

Speaking: Speak slowly and loudly and clearly

Writing: write concisely. The way you do that is by using conjugated verbs and making sure the noun doing the action is the subject and not the predicate. Good: “i wrote this code to fix the issue.” Bad: “this code was written by me to fix the issue”

    • Speaking advice is spot on - slow, calm, confident and people will listen

    • Also it helps to repeat what others say, as that makes then feel heard and then they shut up. “Susan’s concern that taking a dep on the food is valid, but to Jeremy’s point earlier timing is critical and this was the most expedient path “

Also, never be defensive. if you don’t know something say so. And if someone has a valid point, let them know that.

  • For the first point, if its your idea, you probably should have time to guess what someone would say against it.

For the second, it sounds to me like you tend to give long-winded, non-direct answers.

    Try this:
    1. Learn to summarize ANYTHING into ONE SENTENCE. Next time someone asks you something, onoy give yourself one sentence to answer. (Take your time before you speak)
    2. To keep control of the conversation, keep people wanting more. Once you learn to give one sentence answers, start giving answers that make people ask you a question. Provocative, tabloid cover answers. Keep them wanting more.

    • IBM - No one asked you. I Have the ABILITY to summarize, but that doesnt mean i have to. I was being verbose for their benefit 🙄

Interesting point about Elon ... I now recall seeing videos where his deliveries are not super smooth know-it-all, but a bit rough. True, nothing beats shipping!

    I like it HannityS

I always, in team forum, assume the team together will be much smarter than I. When asked “hard” questions, I ask it back to the team.
