Negotiate for more Equity (FB)

Aug 27, 2019 12 Comments

Currently a fresh grad contractor at Facebook, working as full-stack developer. After 5 months here they've made me an offer to convert to FT, coming in as IC3 (as an internal solutions engineer)

The offer is 115 base, 15k equity, 10% bonus

The equity seems super low, what do I say to get more equity?

Wow, what a different time it is to be graduating from college when you have any leverage to negotiate. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, if you can get more then you 100% should. I just think back to when I graduated in 2008-2009, there was no thought of negotiating an offer. I was offered $38,500 salary and I took it and ran!

$243k in salary - For stock, I was one of the first employees at GoodRx so all I can really say is my stock comp is “significant” when/if we exit.

    Try asking for more equity?

I agree. You can ask for more but with 5 months experience and being fresh grad, little to no leverage. Push for 20k and sign the papers, not a bad place to start your career!

Take the offer. Work for a year, move off somewhere else.

Equity is usually higher than this for FTEs in the regular ladder (E3), I’m not sure how contractor conversions work. Doesn’t hurt to ask though - be direct and honest and tell them you’d happily accept the offer if equity was increased.

What was your hourly rate as a contractor? Is the offer lower?

How badly do you want to work at Facebook? If I were you, I would say no and interview at other companies.
