Negotiating for L5 offer at amazon

Jan 5 28 Comments

Hey blinders, I'm here to ask how I should go about negotiating my potential Amazon offer. I just passed the phone screen and I have an on site next week. I feel confident in my ability to interview after 200+ leet code questions.

What I currently make
Location: seattle
Yoe: 4.5
Base: 150k
Signing bonus: 60k over 2 years
Stock: 150k over 4 years.(25% each year)
So my TC is about 215k.

I look at levels.fyi and it seems L5 can range between 160k to 250k tc.

Since I'm not interviewing anywhere else, I feel like I dont really have any room to negotiate.

If they decide they like me and want to make an offer, what should be my strategy for negotiating? What is the most you guys think i could hope for? Do you think levels.fyi is accurate?

I obviously wont switch if they cant offer more money than what I currently make.

Do extremely well in the HM round LP questions. They will give you the top of the band offer.

L4 is the entry level. Huer is most likely confusing the level with Google or made a typo

I pushed them to the top of my band for L6 with no offers and it was because they really wanted me, just do exceptional in your onsite.

    • Anything that follows “just do....” is really hard to do

250 is a good offer for external
The rest of the lower number are bottom of the band promotions or people posting only their base / after 4 years cliff etc

  • Try to get as many other offers as possible. Even if you get a better offer after accepting a mediocre one from Amazon, you can reopen the negotiations. Negotiations without other offers at hand are very difficult.

I feel like it is all I have since I dont have the energy at this point to go out to other FAANG companies and get competing offers.

I'm happy to just get a 20k a raise, but I would go for more if I can. I start my search at Amazon because my friend heard me tell him how terrible my current team at my company is and referred me.

If you were me, what would you do? Bite the bullet and interview elsewhere? How much do you think I could get with competing offers?

    • I would just apply everywhere, try to arrange as many interviews as possible as soon as possible. FANG or not doesn’t matter, my objective would be to get good offers that I can use in my negotiation.

If you do well they'll likely start you in the middle of the band which is about $250k. Do very well and try to get competing offers.

Seattle L5 middle of the band is 240-250. I work at Amazon not sure what other source I can cite.

Your personal experience is a great source. Thank you. I just wanted to see if there was another website you were using.

Like if I dont get an Amazon offer, whatever. I'll just move teams at my current company.
But I should have a plan on what to do if I get an offer, right? Or you think i should just have waited until I got an offer before thinking about how I wanted to negotiate?

I have 25/25/25/25 at my current company. Is Amazon exclusively 5/15/40/40?

I don’t think your YOE warrants a top of the band offer. Unless you completely blow them away in the interview. If you aim for about 240 you should be ok, if you do well in the interview
