I just got offered an l60 position at Microsoft in Redmond and was told I would hear offer details on Thursday. They asked if I had any preferences for salary and I just said whatever standard was for my yoe ( was this the right move?) I'm scared I'll get low balled as I have no competing offers. I looked at levels.fyi and it looks like a good offer includes around 120k base and 120k stock. Any suggestions for Thursday if they give a lower offer? Do I ask for more on the spot with no competing offers? TC: 135k YOE: 2
No competing offer = low ball.
Any suggestions to ask for more? Should I mention I heard the avg amount for this level is some amount higher?
Just tell them you’re making more now and won’t move if we don’t at least get to $X TC
MSFT loves returning interns, they get more stocks compared to 3 level above them. When low-balled, ask for more politely but firmly, the only leverage you have is if they feel like you are ready to walk. But be careful not to torpedo the whole thing.
I recently accepted an offer for L60, and was in the same position without competing offers, here's what I did to negotiate the initial offer: base wasn't much higher after cost of living changes, foregoing promotion soon, other interviews coming up (cough Amazon). Some things to take away: - Recruiter is on your side, so be nice to them when asking for more - They low-ball to begin with having the expectation that you will negotiate (hence just a verbal offer to begin), so don't ever accept the initial. - I prefer negotiating over email, but might be personal preference. Either way you should be prepared to provide a justification for your asking price, nobody will budge because you want more. - As others mentioned, stocks won't be as generous as fresh grads for industry hires. TC at MS: 125k 80k 15k YOE: 1.5 They budged 7k on base and 30k on stocks. Maybe I could've also gotten a larger sign on, but I was happy with the offer
This was very helpful. Thanks!
Is this offer post negotiation? Your initial base offer was 118k then?
I should have tried to negotiate base. I got 115.5k/150/15 for L60.
You will be lowballed as hell, don’t even hope for 120k stock, you gonna get something like 115k base 15k stock 10k sign on
Do you suggest I ask there on the spot for more stock. Should I provide any reason or just ask more?
Well former interns usually get 150k, you could say you're better than an intern, but idk if they'll buy it, they love interns.
