My recruiter wants me to give my desired salary to him to start with. Any chance someone has some tips?
I am interviewing for a position outside US and I dont know how much they can pay for it.

It's your call but you could ask what their expected range is for the role.

Don't give a desired salary upfront. Let him know you haven't thought about it much, you need time to think about it, not just considering salary but everything else, things to discuss with others, etc...

Recruiters pressure you to give a # upfront to get an anchor. Don't give it to them.

    • I believe they opened position for me specifically and that I am the only candidate in the loop.

Oh nice! In that case I see the dilemma. Since you already asked for a range I'd rec getting TC out of the recruiter then and use the fact that you still have your position at MSFT as leverage when he pushes and says no. Recruiter + company a lot more to lose by not giving you an offer.

AKA tell us what you want so if you lowball yourself we can pay you less than we were expecting. Always get the other side to give a number first.

  • They asked long before interviews and i said that I didnt think much about it. Than they asked right before the interviews and now after the interviewers again :) I still dont know the level (or if passed but I guess I did) but I do know the position.
