Netflix - I think it will eventually take a big hit

There is a reason Netflix does not show live IMDB ratings , because ratings for most movies are way low ! Amazon Prime Movies shows IMDb ratings. With Disney also joining the field, Netflix is bound to take a hit. On a positive note the feature that I like most in NFLX is the ability to download a movie and then watch it when I am on the train / subway etc.

I don't understand, you are saying Netflix is one DB query from being Amazon prime and it will take a hit because of that?

Oracle ueueueue Feb 24, 2019

He is saying that Netflix has shit content, and I agree. Not sure about whether it will take a hit though!!

Google YAPTRF Feb 24, 2019

Agree that their content has taken a nose dive. Hulu has much better content

Google yPsy13 Feb 24, 2019

FWIW IMDB is owned by Amazon.

Yelp RXCk00 Feb 24, 2019

Considering that Amazon owns IMDb, it should be no surprise that Amazon Prime shows IMDb ratings. From a product standpoint it’s a no brainer that Netflix would promote its own rating system as opposed to showing IMDb because not only are ratings relative, you don’t want to promote a competitors product.

My issue is that they renoved user reviews as well so I have to check the imdb scores / reviews manually to dodge crappy movies (which they recommend a lot)

Netflix has NO ratings system ! And IMDB is standard and well accepted

Microsoft Kdofkral Feb 24, 2019

IMDb is horrible

What are you smoking ? IMDB for a movie with many ratings is as close to accurate as anything. Any movie with a 7+ rating is mostly watchable

Amazon Prime Video also allows you to download content for watching offline.

Microsoft HtIB24 Feb 24, 2019

Yeah, but Prime's player and cataloging system is awful...

Square SQ Feb 24, 2019

Imdb ratings are worse than Yahoo answers.

Oracle Numbats Feb 24, 2019

Disagree. IMDB has the best ratings system. I find rotten tomatoes to be reliable too.

Square SQ Feb 24, 2019

Not really. 90% on rotten tomatoes? 7.2 on imdb. 65% on rotten tomatoes? 7.2 on imdb. 30% on rotten tomatoes? 6.1 on imdb.

Netflix doesn't use ratings because ratings are just noise. The last time the box office champion winning Oscar was Forrest Gump in 1993. Arthouse movies tend to have high ratings and low popularity. Superhero movies are just the opposite. Netflix recommendation algorithm is some sophisticated clustering algorithm. If you belong to a group because your watched content are highly correlated and this group watch something you haven't, the content will be recommended to you. Maybe you like arts, or maybe you like craps. It doesn't matter. Netflix will feed your taste. So you can thumb up or down because you like it or not. But you can't rate it which is a question of the movie's quality, not your personal preference. At the end of the day, Netflix replaces ratings with thumb up / down because the latter improves viewing hours in AB test.

You typed a whole bunch of crap!! Ratings absolutely work, look at all the superhero movie ratings . Exactly it does improve viewing hours , and hence it works out better for Netflix rather than show the junk ratings. But when the facade wears off, the truth will come out

Netflix Narcos Feb 24, 2019

Well, your personal opinion means nothing compared to rigid AB test.

Netflix Narcos Feb 24, 2019

BTW, Disney couldn't hold the candle for HBO in linear TV era. And HBO has its own streaming. I am not convinced Netflix will take a hit when Disney is forced into this transition.

Spokeo ejPB81 Feb 24, 2019

I think it will. Disney+ is going to be, what, $24.95 a month minimum? It's a "take my money" situation for a lot of people, especially if you can bundle Disney+ and ESPN+ Eventually some will look at all the monthly charges adding up and start doing some trimming. With similar valuations between Netflix and Disney, I think the best thing is if Apple buys one.

Netflix Narcos Feb 24, 2019

No, Disney+ will be less than $10. Iger admitted Rodney couldn't compete against Netflix on quantity so it will undercut on price.
