What is this hype around the culture of Netflix? The book about Netflix - No Rules Rules is being posted and recommend on linkedin by its members every day. Can culture of the company really impact the productivity of workers that much? Or its more about CEO of Netflix being a visionary, not that much about the culture
It’s a cult where they worship money, fire a lot of people, and justify it by pretending it makes them more efficient engineers
Love it here. Just joined 4 months ago tho. I like the idea that Netflix is a business, not a family. I think they will let you go if you are not making a clear impact or 'fitting well', if that happened to me I would not take it personaly, since I think they are paying for that additional risk and are upfront about it. Also, I think the percentage of people that are let go here are similar to those in the tech industry, except netflix is way more open about it.
8% vs industry 6%, only slightly more. But the company makes sure you are well aware of the culture during the interview. So if you don't like the culture, you won't likely join. This reduces lots of friction.
what are some top reasons people let go?
The Netflix culture is really valuable and the biggest reason i haven't left. The money is nice, but you couldn't pay me enough to work for a company or manager with a bad culture as the stress and frustration isn't worth it. However, the culture at Netflix is different on every team. Some follow it more than others and it really depends on the manager, director, and org you are a part of. Content production, finance, data science, product engineering, and other roles have unique cultures. So if you decide to work at Netflix because you like the culture, it is important to remember to ask questions about the parts of culture you like or are nervous about and to make sure you really like the manager. The best people at Netflix are the ones who can be given context alone, and then can figure out how to succeed on their own. They also know when to bring in others and are willing to drop everything to help others in return. These are the great examples of the impact culture can have with 'stunning colleagues'. I have worked for people who fit that example, and those who haven't within the same org, team, and between managers at Netflix. Make sure in your interviews you get a sense for how well you think the manager and panel fit the culture you want to work in.
Well, the culture of Netflix in a nutshell - hire the best, pay them a lot, expect them to perform at their best every day, and give it all to the job, fire brilliant assholes, don't waste time on reskilling an let people go when their skills are not needed anymore. It surely impacts organization efficiency.
So just like FB but with better pay?
I would say they just more honest about it and talk about it upfront. They are very clear about their philosophy - employees are considered kinda partners supplying talent for money, so they are treated as partners. Eg, on entrance you can choose how much of an equity you want in your package, if you want it all in cash, that’s cool. They don’t have salary ranges, they are trying to evaluate a value of every individual on the market, not just purely the job.
