What does the Blind hive mind think? Netflix hired a former EA former FB exec to run their games initiative but it smacks of “oh shit we’d better have something with games just in case”. Games take years to make and are stupidly difficult to get right even from veteran teams that know what they’re doing. Does Netflix think they can compete or will this just be Stadia/Luna with a different logo? #netflix #games #stadia #ea #streaming #Luna
I don’t think they’re making games, instead a platform for games (I think, don’t quote me on this). If they make their own games, it’s probably in their best interest to acquire 3rd party studios
I am guessing Phil Harrison has not been available? Now all FAANGs tried games and Apple is the most successful by far since it quickly figured it sucks at making its own games.
It's truly free without in-game purchase and it can use some Netflix IPs. All available on a distribution platform 200M members visit regularly. That's its core competencies. The bar for success is also low, think of it as Amazon Prime Video, it's shitty compared to Netflix but it helps the shopping regardless. Ask yourself this question, if Netflix provides a Tetris game that's like other Tetris games provided. Don't you prefer it as it's free?
Does Netflix think they can compete? Compete with what exactly?
It's not really different from adding originals, movies, unscripted to the service. Some users like them, some don't. Those all work over time. And if it doesn't, so be it. Netflix used to have 3D content, now it doesn't.
Ricewater, the difference is that games aren’t passive. There are inputs from the players that need to be received and resolved. Quickly.
So? Netflix can license games from the best developers. It doesn't need to develop games in house this year. I don't see why that's a challenge.
Yes. And unless the end user has hardware that can run the game client locally, Netflix will have to solve the problem of receiving and and resolving player inputs rapidly.
That will fix it.
So are they looking to make a Fortnite people can play with their clunky tv remotes?
More likely a FMV game. They already have a whole bunch of interactive shows apparently https://www.whats-on-netflix.com/library/interactive-titles-on-netflix/ Or, judging by the fact they are not hiring any devs, it's a "platform" they want others make content for.
Gotta take the wait and see approach, but history says it will be closer to stadia than anything else. Will all depend on if they can get an independent team that has a great idea or an already great game no one has heard of.
