i was recently laid off at Square and now looking for a referral at Netflix in payment ops. anyone willing to help me out with the refferal?
I just had a call with Netflix the other day, and all I can say is... WHY. The culture doc reads like a cult manual and people have zero stability there unless you're working at 150% efficiency. I got a crazy pretentious vibe from the hiring manager. Dunno what you see in them, but good luck to you. I have an on-site with Square next week, any tips? Might be uncool to ask in a thread where you're looking for a referral but... I'd help you if I could. All I can do is tell you not to work at Intuit :P
Sorry, but why not intuit?
Thanks for the insights about Netflix. I heard great reviews about Netflix before. It might have changed. Did you apply with a referral? Glad to hear you are in the final stages of interviewing at Square. I would recommend studying well the new company’s (Jack’s) vision of the ecosystem at Square and how it would benefit them (throw it in there). Have your personal goals align with Square’s mission which is economic empowerment. Depending on the role you are applying for they would be impressed if you know more about bitcoin and how their cash is benefiting from it. (Jack is crazy about bitcoin) lastly they love people with confidence so walking like you are Jack Dorsey! Best of luck! Let us know how it rolls!
@shameless Square is shifting to a financial institution rather than payment system hence the focus on ecosystem of Startups. They’ve added Square card and Square capital for loans.
Makes sense. Yes, they applied to be a charter too but still waiting on approval. Thanks for sharing. Sorry to go off topic on your thread. Just curious if you didn't want to join a POS like Toast with FinTech experience from SQ.
I wonder if Toast has an office out here in the Bay Area 🤔 Honestly, I am open to join any tech company as long as the culture is good. My last experience with Square put me through a mental distress bc they basically wanted us to quit so we can skip on the severance package. I remained resilient and waited for the severance pay since i had long tenure. If you know any other companies, I am open to suggestions.
Sorry to hear that. I had really high expectations from SQ. But in such a large company internal politics scale pretty fast. I like Plaid (Visa), Stripe, Ayden, PayPal. Toast is based out of Boston. There is Olo as well. If you follow Techmeme on Twitter it lists a lot of pre-ipo FinTech companies doing stuff. Hope that helps or let me know if I can help any other way.
Sorry, but why laid of at Square? It's my dream company to work for. Care to share how really is it to work there?
They are restructuring focusing on ecosystem of startups. Not all teams were affected! Only non-tech at HQ. Other than that, the company is great just not as before when the CFO Sarah Friar was there. They cut off on so many benefits (new employees no longer get RSUs) and there is too much office politics. If you kiss their ass, you may be able to survive.
Interesting that they are making a segway in their business plan to now focus on ecosystem of startups. But I thought they always did that coming out with new register, POS for restaurants. So not sure if this about building a new product. I know things have been downhill since Sarah moved onto NextDoor. Not sure why Jack wouldn't let her be CEO, she was brilliant. She was awesome. Very sad to know about office politics, that's dirty and last thing I want to be involved.
