A few months ago I had an initial conversation with a hiring manager which seemed to go pretty well. Towards the end she told me to ask her any questions I might have. I asked her how is the WLB in her team. She didn’t like that question at all. Her response was “I honestly don’t know how to answer that question. What do you mean by WLB ? We at Netflix look for people who are really motivated and always willing to push themselves.” The next day I got a rejection mail from the recruiter saying I am not a culture fit. Not trolling, Netflix seems brutal. PS: it wasn’t actually me, posting for one my close friends at FB
Wow. Given their culture deck, even if they pay me a million dollars, I will never be interested in working there. I want peace in life, money can come later.
That's Microsoft!
How bad is Netflix WLB.. I am having a hiring manager call soon with them.. OP, what’s ur hiring manager asked during the interview
She asked my friend about his project overview, passion etc. Seems like they are abhorrent to lazy/ people who care about wlb
Okk .. yea their deck says it all .. scary
Wtf does WLB stand for? What's it mean?
Work life balance It means you are getting enough personal time for yourself and not working to death
Did you read the Netflix Culture doc? It answers your question for you. Netflix hires experienced top talent. You are not it. WLB is managed by the employee, not the company.
Lol @ Netflix hires top talent. Where did you get that from? Netflix hires a good percentage of their folks from WITCH bodyshops. Don’t believe me? Check the LinkedIn profiles of Netflix engineers.
Though they may lack pedigree and prestige, what makes you think WITCH engineers are so bad? The reality is that getting ahead in software is all about LeetCode, familiarity with learnable system design best practices, personal brand and the ability to sell oneself. It has almost nothing to do with software engineering.
She may have overreacted but that's a stupid question to ask. It's the same as asking about vacation and pay on first call.
For me, culture eats TC for breakfast. I think WLB is a fair question no matter how early in the game you are. Don't waste my time if everyone is expected to work 80 hour weeks.
That's your choice, and that choice will never land you job at tier 1
Work is life Life is work
Sounds like your life sucks.
What are people talking about, pop by Netflix carpark after 5:30pm it will be mostly empty, on a Friday after 4:00pm. People that live in SF arrive at 9:45 and leave at 4:30 WLB is the main reason I joined and have stayed at Netflix, other than TC
Thank her for saving u. You're probably better off not working there if u had to ask.
Interview tip. Never ask the interviewer about wlb. Get that info elsewhere. The interview is your opportunity to present yourself as hard worker.
The interview is also the opportunity for prospective employee to determine whether the company is the right fit. Why would you present yourself as something you're not?
Because any company would rather have the candidate that goes the extra mile often. Put yourself in managers shoe. You have 2 candidates who are equal in everything but given the opportunity to ask questions, one of them asks enthusiastic question about work and the other asks about wlb. Whom will you take?
