As etiquette demands...$100k/5 YOE

I'm stuck between these two.

MS is offering $225k in Redmond and Netflix is closer to $275k.

Ignoring the compensation (because they're close enough in my opinion), what do you think about the other stuff surrounding the job? Is it preferable to live near Los Gatos or Redmond? Are people nicer in one community versus the other?

Which area do you think is more pleasant for someone looking to put down roots? Thanks blinders, please let me know if I can provide more info for you all.

If your motivation is putting down roots and long term job security through years of experience, Netflix may not be a good culture fit.

There are plenty of people who have been at Netflix for a long time, but it’s because they continue to be the right people for the job and they continue to be high performers and introspective leaders. it’s not the kind of place one coasts by on their tenure.

Your quality of living will be higher with Microsoft. Better comp/ cost living. Better WLB. Debatably more interesting work.

$225k in Redmond is more than $275k in Los Gatos. To make it equal Netflix should offer you $290.
Check on cost of living calculator and factor in state taxes (0 in WA).
    Sorry for not ignoring comp.
Los Gatos has better climate, Redmond community is better, at my opinion.

Comp is low. Need to put lot of hours to make it work at Netflix. Except weather, Redmond isn't bad.

Do not work for Netflix if you care about stability. Netflix is notorious for being the worst -

If you don't mind worrying EVERY SINGLE DAY about getting fired from the most cut throat company on the planet for 50k more (35k after taxes) then definitely Netflix!

Netflix and desire to put down roots do not go well with each other. Microsoft is perfect for it though.

Seattle is is growing quickly as the next tech hub.

MS has amazing job security and WLB for the industry.

Other than those things it really depends on the specific team at each company.

We also keep hiring people. And it’s pretty obvious who’s likely to be laid off

Engineers rarely get laid-off, specially at the HQ. Theres so many internal openings, if you can't find another team within MSFT after your team gets cut its mostly your fault.

Because of the comp? I know someone who was offered a little less than that (for web)

Another thing to consider is that you are starting at $275k at Netflix and your market value after a couple years at Netflix could increase your pay significantly well into the 300’s. There are no ridiculous salary bands that stunt your pay.

I know tons of people who have been at Netflix for more than 5 years and we’re not worked to death. Usually the manager will get fired if their team is worked to death.
