The engineering director can make $850K cash salary! Source: https://www.quanwei.tech/green/?q=Netflix
That’s like a M5 equivalent?
Google, FB and Amazon Directors are paid more actually. The difference is Director at Netflix has like 10 people total under them while other places will easily have 100+ people in Directors org. Yeah, Netflix overpays because of the extra risk you take. You can be fired anytime
They don't get RSUs, all cash!
How much bonus can Goldman directors get? The base salary is only about $400K-$500K. Source: https://www.quanwei.tech/?q=Goldman&job=Director
Same thing. They can buy stock with the cash if they want, and we can sell RSUs for cash.
Is the work at Netflix really difficult? I don’t undertake why engineers are paid so highly there.
They dont give RSUs. Theoritically speaking having a high TC in RSUs is good from Tax pov, assuming the company doesnt tank
It’s basically your worth- how much are you getting paid translates to what the output is. Honestly never understood what Netflix does to pay so high to its employees and that too all in cash!! From apples to apples in terms of technology Netflix is not doing anything revolutionary that will differentiate it from Hulu or Prime Video. Content may be better in some cases but that doesn’t translate into high pay for an Engineer.
That isn't how it works. You pay someone what the market demands for their labor. Regardless of how much or how little they actually produce. What they produce may serve as some sort of cap for what you're willing to pay, but it won't determine what you're going to pay. As long as other companies are willing to pay X for the same engineers you need to hire, you're going to have to also pay X.
We are not competing against Hulu and Amazon. We are competing against FG and hot startups for engineers. That's why it's so high. If G raises salary 10% company wide, we'll get an adjustment too.
Only if you think 800k is a lot...
ONLY if your TC/ level was high prior to Netflix. They pay ~20% more than the market salary for your position.
Not as high as Albertsons!
$750K seems like a lot, but it’s not that much when you realize a director has, at least, 30-40 engineers under him/her(often more). Anyone in charge of that many engineers can either help(or hurt) the company in absurd ways, depending on how good of a job they do. So they’re absolutely worth $750K annually, to the company, because if they do their jobs right, they’ll bring in more than that.
Nailed it

I am pretty certain a Google engineering director can make that much too. RSUs are practically cash.
