I have a few offers, two of them from Netflix and Google. This is for my final internship before I graduate. I cannot move / delay either. Assume that I will get a return offer at Netflix for $245k all cash. I've heard Google returns are around 220k but can go higher, any ideas on this? I know internship salary should not be my decision factor, but just listing here for reference. Google ~$53 an hour ~$9000 pre-tax stipend, so ~5.5k after tax Netflix ~$69 an hour ~Corporate Housing or $10k Post-Tax stipend (Netflix handles the taxes) Both locations: Bay Area From a team perspective, both teams are great! I don't have a strong preference either way. From a resume brand perspective perhaps Google is better? Which to pick for my final internship? Please let me know your reasoning in the comments. Internship pay should play 0 role into your decision, it’s peanuts. The deciding factor is where you want to work upon graduation.
Where would you rather get a full time offer? Does the money make a difference to you or other factors like wlb, product, prestige, etc?
I guess prestige doesn't matter as much because I already have Apple, Nvidia, and AWS on my resume. The pay makes a difference I think. In that aspect it seems like Netflix can push to top of market easier? I know the people I interviewed with at Netflix were extremely talented. Would learn a ton there, so I guess leaning towards that.
Netflix new grad roles are harder to get, I would lean Netflix here.
Yes, max offer this year was $270k (my friend got it and recruiter told him that was the max they can do), google will not exceed that even if u have a 400k offer from a hedge fund tho. I believe you can also check levels to get insights into how google negotiates new grad offers
Oh wow, interesting. Did you friend intern there and convert? Or was this through direct new grad interviews?
It was through direct new grad interviews, as long as you have an offer that’s higher than whatever google offers they’ll match it or give you slightly more (unless it’s absurd like 400k). Also intern salary is useless to consider, pick the company that offers you interesting work and scope to grow with good wlb. Imo, google is the clear choice as Netflix is slowly dying due to heavy competition in the streaming space.
You 100% should go Netflix here.
What's your reasoning?
Your biggest priority is personal growth these next few years. That requires getting on a great project with massive scale and being surrounded by top talent for mentorship. Google doesn’t pay well anymore, they are slow moving, and is very large to the point where it’s hard to get on a good project. Netflix is much smaller (easier to get on a good project), pays much more, and has better talent for mentorship because they pay a lot more. They are harder to get into as well, which will open doors.
Both have great names. I believe by that the odds of getting on a team done real stuff is greater at Netflix than it is at google. Google is just so big they have teams that are stale. Netflix is very concentrated so everything you do is meaningful.
Go cheap and take the 10k.
I've tried to look around, but at most I would save like 4k and transportation would be terrible to the office. If I go corporate I can just use the shuttles and the location, furniture, and amenities are in-person verified by the talent team.
Wouldn't the company provide transportation? Well either way its a win. Congrats on your offer sir. Wish I were as smart as you when I was young
You can always apply and join Google. Netflix is much harder to get in as a new grad
