I have a person who struggled with social skills since I was a kid, and I have had to deal with bullying and humiliation throughout my life. I suffer from anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. Nevertheless, I did well academically. I completed my Ph.D. and my postdoc from top US Universities. During my postdoc, my supervisor harassed me so much that I literally ran away from my job. Following that, I joined a lab, and it did not work out well over there, and I had a heartbreak during the same time. I got into heavy drinking and fell into severe depression during this period. Many of my friends took advantage of me and humiliated me. Many of them left.
I eventually landed a job in a prestigious institution, and this is supposed to be a game-changer in my life. I am ambitious, and I know if I work diligently, good things are coming. However, I still cannot quit drinking. I have stopped talking to most of my friends, and I feel there is nobody to reach out to. How can I get over my past trauma and start a better life? #depression #mentalhealth #newjob

What's worked for me: Alcoholics Anonymous, trauma therapy (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Internal Family Systems), medication, and exercise.
If you haven't already, read The Body Keeps the Score.
I have ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, PTSD, and two addictions. My support network looks like two sponsors, 3-5 program meetings a week, therapy 1x week, psychiatrist monthly, workout 2-3 weekly.
I haven't taken a drink in 14 months, I've been to events with drinking, I've said "no thanks" after being offered a drink. I no longer spend time thinking about drinking. I've gotten my life back, I'm growing into being the person I always wanted to be.
You have lots of options. Google "AA meetings near me" and just go to one. Find a therapist who specializes in trauma. Ask your doctor about help with anxiety.
