New And Ambitious

Joined MS recently and being new, i am ambitious and all charged up to impress. However, feeling a little overwhelmed in a relatively competitive environment. Any tips to stand out in a sea of overworking-ready-to-fight-for-work environment? Is working extra hours the usual trend? Dont want to set up that expectations already.

Whatever you do, don’t overpromise and underdeliver. Stick to your estimates. Very important to build trust during the initial period. That can make or mar your future and opportunities for growth.

BS advice. Here is the real one: Overpromise Make some motions as if you were preparing to deliver in a big way. After a year, just start talking about another exciting project. Repeat for 3 years. Get a team, so that you do not even need to pretend to do anything. Get promoted to Principal level.

If you don’t enjoy your work and ready to treat some of your spare time to it, you’re in the wrong industry friend.

I love my field and never shy from working on new tech stacks but i dont want to donate my spare hours to "assigned" work ..

Not worth it honestly...just do a good job and go home. I have a coworker that works 60+ hours on the same team, while I work 30. We both started at the same time/level and have been here 2 years. The career growth/ salary increase he has seen compared to me is not that significant especially considering he literally works twice as much as I do. Don’t burn yourself out, we’re not Amazon...

Wow. The "quality" of advice here is astounding. I wonder if anyone of the commenrjters actually really works at ms. Their experience is considerably different than mine and I've been at ms forever.
