Hi, I have a BS in electrical engineering. I’ve been working for the Navy as a federal employee for a year now. I’m making $70 base pay, get OT if I want to but no bonuses, etc.. I’m projected to be making around $80K in 2 years from now. Should I stick around or should I try looking for another job? Note: Work is paying for my masters in Electrical engineering.
do you get pension with your current gig?
Yes, Simply put 1% of my highest pay for each year of service. So, if I leave when making $100K and 30 years of work, I get $30K a year after I reach retirement age
That is pretty sweet...no retirement plans in the private world that I know of...you got to stack it away yourself. To make 30k on a private retirement plan, you'd need to save 750k; at tier2 sw companies you can make that in 10 years
I keep reading on Blind people making 100K plus even 180k seems like a common salary. That doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Can anyone explain, or am I just that under paid?
Most of the blind folks are in the bay area or Seattle. Salary is adjusted to match the cost of living. If you are not in either CA or WA you will have a serious ego destroyer by reading these salaries. And by the way, most Tier 1 (FAANG) and tier 2 companies pay a lot more than other smaller companies
The grass always seems greener on the otherside...keep in mind that these are boomtimes in tech, if there is a downcycle, it'll get cut-throat
Blind will make even $100k look like a bad comp despite being twice the median salary! This is just tech. If you see what wall st bankers and hedge fund folks make you will become suicidal!
My recommendation.. Get the degree. Not my area of expertise but I am sure MS gets you more dough than a BS. Evaluate your options over once you get the degree

Most of the TC you see are software engineers at top tech companies. Govt. jobs almost will never match in TC. (But instead you get nice benefits and way better wlb)
