Hi! I'm about to graduate, and I have these offers: Optiver ($170k): 100 base + 30 signon + 30 bonus + 10 relo - Meh WLB (9am - 6pm) basically - essentially stuck with one/two programming languages in a specific niche (low latency trading) - can make $200k TC in around 2 years (profit sharing quickly overtakes your base) Atlassian ($150k): 96 base + 10 relo/signon + ~45 stock/year - Good WLB (10am - 5pm) basically - Easy to switch roles Very conflicted as to how to start my career. What would you do? Please leave a comment with reasoning if you can! I really have no clue what to take š
Whereās the Atlassian position located? Base seems very low
Standard for Sydney š
Atlassian. In this shit economy, Atlassian has the name and enough products to survive and even thrive. Optiver? Who the fuck knows what they do.
As a new grad - optimize for growth; thatās it - WLB especially and money (as long as you have enough to afford living in whichever city you are relocating to ) can wait until later - with more skills and experience you will be able to jump in 2y. Also if itās SF most people work a lot so not sure with whom you want to socialize here at 5pm ....
WLB at atlassian depends on manager. We do have 24X7 oncall like amazon. So indont know what makes u think WLB is 10 to 5
Agreed. Feel like WLB is team dependent. My team feels like it's as much work as a startup...
If your commute is 1 hour each way, yes
Figure out your life priorities and then decide. Itās rewarding when you find what you like and work hard to archive it. I think either companies are okay. What matter more for you now is the team and the manager since you are new. Find a good leader that you aspire to be, find a good role that let you feel you are important and grow into it. Low latency is hard and technically more challenging so thereās more things to learn so make sure that the manager and the team is not jackasses. Good engineers often donāt know how to talk to people.
Nope. That's a different person who got an offer as a performance engineer. I messaged him in his DM's.
Don't listen to people saying to ignore WLB. Even though you're young, it depends on what kind of life you want to live. Youre just graduating, getting a job, now you can make some money AND enjoy the rest of life.
Youāre a new grad. Iām assuming youāre not married? What would you do with WLB? Just work your a$$ off now and earn a lot of money.
yeah I'm 20 so not married haha. You're right though, I just am not sure if I can build a good friend circle and have a good social life while living independently working 9 hrs a day
Iām guessing you still have the weekends to yourself.
