This has been asked before, but I'm having a tough time choosing and would appreciate additional input. Currently hold new grad SWE offers from both. I prioritize career growth/interesting projects/learning over wlb. I interned at Google before and really enjoyed it. I think there's a wider scope of problems and interesting products which is great. But I'm not sure about my PA (ads), and team matching (prefer the flexibility of Facebook's bootcamp). Things also tend to be kind of slow. Facebook I heard has better growth and faster promo, which is extremely important to me. But the risk of pip is higher and not crazy about the products. TC is ~185k for both. Thanks! #facebook #google
Facebook if you want more growth
+1 go to FB if you want to prioritize early career growth
Do a coin toss if you really don't know how to decide
What roles for both? SWE or PM?
SWE, updated post.
I'd say Facebook because you mentioned growth is more important. It could be more work, which is good in early career, and also if you're good enough there really isn't a component of stress/pressure it's just a much fast changing environment than Google
Good heuristic: if two options seem equal, pick the one with more short-term pain.
huh, why is that a good heuristic? Is it not counterintuitive?
Experience is really only team dependent. I think re-joining your intern team could be fastest growth of all
My team isn't at the location I wanted (and have an offer for), so I'd have to start afresh unfortunately.
FB, get to E5 in 4 years and then jump to G to rest and vest.
is L5 at G in 4 years not doable? I thought L4 in 2y and L5 in 2.5y was the average (4.5y total)? So there should be a good number of people that do it in <= 4y, its probably doable if thats what you want.
If you prioritize career growth over WLB, the answer is clear.
Facebook should offer better growth. Many people at Google are there to simply rest and vest.
Fb will be more money over time, and you will get promoted faster. Google will be more relaxed and less stress. Depends on what you want to optimize for.
Bumping this. In the end, your experience will be determined by your team, manager, and product but the overall vibe I'm getting is more wlb with less growth at Google vs less wlb with more growth. I would say the "safer" option is to start with G and if you feel "bored", you can always jump to something more exciting with G on the resume.
I’d say it’s better to start with FB and if you feel worn out, switch
