Hi people! I have 3 new grad SWE offers and would really appreciate some advice!! Personally, I'm interested in lower level systems infra like compilers/OS/distributed systems/parallel computing, and also developing algorithms for big data. I would care most about my tech skills growth, and less about money/WLB DoorDash: pros: be able to learn about building new infra since it's a new project cons: 1. food delivery has too many competitors 2. interview experience was not great Virtu: pros: 1. become an expert at C++ 2. harder to experience HFT in the future cons: 1. I would learn very narrow trading knowledge and C++ 2. SWE are not treated as good as traders 3. tech skills grow very slowly and the experience is not applicable if I go back to tech Microsoft pros: 1. the code base is well-documented 2. I like the team cons: 1. 2. new grads probably don't get much responsibilities and ownership and don't get to work on any system infra I would appreciate any suggestions! Thanks a lot! #software #microsoft #doordash #virtu #ipo #offer
Was that the standard virtu offer or after negotiating?
Virtu has pretty terrible wlb from what I have heard.
Is location Austin ?
Coredev is a great role at Virtu and it's not true they're not treated as well as traders. The heads of coredev are some of the most respected people in the company. It'll take a long time for you to grow the kind of credibility they command, but it's not like junior traders have that better.
There has been an exodus of coredevs over this year... They are definitely not as well treated as traders.
The retention of senior team members was good. I'd say junior or mid-level developers have more outside options than junior or mid-level traders do. To retain these people a company needs to pay them well *and* offer better work conditions, including better WLB and growth opportunities. Some say a place like Jane Street pays traders and developers roughly equally, but given how stressful trading is, you might be able say developers are actually treated better, at least until their TC growth slows down compared to top traders.
After the recent bonus numbers, @wanttc I'd say I wish you were right but you weren't.
