New grad at uber india

Feeling low by all the layoffs, I have just joined a month back and have lot to catch up on tech. There is no good senior to mentor and I end up crying alone everyday. How do I get over this ? I have performed very well in academics and internships earlier. I can't speak with my maneger openly as I fear of being looked as under performer.

Asking for help is not under performance.

Most of the folks are busy with their work. Even if I ask I won't get a concrete answer !

Talked with some senior buddies. They said to atleast stay for an year before switch. For freshers not easy to switch without experience !

Don't be too hard on yourself..u r just starting ur career and beginning a new phase of life..talk to ur manager and share him your thoughts (don't be too direct though).. experienced folks generally love the enthusiasm of fresher's and also there is not huge expectation from you at this point in time..so don't think about this underperformance stuff..talk to folks around and share your thoughts...layoffs happen in our industry but all people who are laid off will find something equally good if not better in few months time..enjoy ur time and work hard..

Thanks Ankur. I am working my best, completing the tasks. But not understanding many things bugs me a lot.

It's the right time and age to overcome the fear of not asking questions to your Seniors. Everyone is always going to be busy but be consistent in your approach to clarify your doubts. Do you think senior people don't ask their peers or other senior people when they get stuck? Software development is more of a collaborative work than individual.

Make relationships outside of your team. It will take time getting used to when you first join, especially at Uber.

Take it easy on yourself. Most of us when we were new to the industry right out of college were overwhelmed too by the whole process of shipping code and understating large (maybe legacy) codebases. Just keep cracking at it and work smart and hard. You have only one direction to go in and that’s ☝️

Slow down , try to understand stuff, collate questions, ask for help even if the seniors are busy, or fix up a calendar invite for discussions
