Tips and tricks to succeed at Amazon as a new grad.
Hey all,
I have heard of 100s if crazy, scary amazon stories.
But what advice you have for someone just starting out? This is gonna be my 1st software engineering job. What should I do to be successful?
I wanna learn as much as possible and put in sincere 7-8 hours but donโt wanna do it more than that.
Iโm a US citizen if that makes any difference. More worried than excited about starting.
Also, is it wise to change teams in a couple of months of joining?
Thanks ๐

2. Learn as much as possible
3. Absorb information from your peers, shadow leaders in meetings, understand decision making. Given Amazon is pretty flat you will have a lot of those opportunities
4. Be aware if this is a short term plan or a long term plan
5. Donโt think about switching teams right at start. Learn to love your job and you just might enjoy it. If your manager is a D then sure change but donโt join with the mindset that you are there to hop between teams from the get go.
6. When you get pipped please come back here and tell us your story!!
The more typical experience you will get here is that you will work hard but your co-workers will be good people.
If you're really lucky, you can get yourself a 30-35 hr/week team and not have a sociopathic manager.
Regardless of your team, nobody will deny that Amazon is an excellent learning opportunity, even my friend who got pipped (after only working for 2 months!!!) for totally bs reasons. Working at this scale is hard to beat, and there is good reason why Amazon looks great on your resume.
So for now, ignore the blind karma wh0res that just spam every Amazon post with pip (ok, I'm guilty too).
My advice is turn off blind and be prepared to treat Amazon as tuition. You have nothing to fear since you are not on H1B. Worst case, you get a big ass severance package and the blessing in disguise of never being allowed to work at Amazon again. Best case you learn a lot and get attention from Google recruiters.
