New job, tips on socializing

small company, everyone is heads down busy trying to catch up. its easy to get sucked into code and deliverables and realize few months later that haven’t made any connection. i need interject myself into conversations, but since i dont have much idea about the lingo ... it is being slow. also i can not come up with quips like you all smart extroverts ... any tips?
