New to Bay Area.. where to live

Moving to Bay Area after new year. Any suggestions or available options on where to live?

- Mountain View office
- no more than 1hr commute (2hrs a day)
- Gbus availability
- 2k max
- prefer small and nice places over large and old places
- willing to share with another roommate(s)
- currently in NYC so prefer relatively urban areas (probably not SF coz of crazy rents and commute time)
- just for a single person

This is blind so expecting some trolls but I seriously need some guidance. TIA.

Is your priority as urban as possible or shortest commute? If you want to sacrifice commute time for more urban living: downtown SJ. Less urban, ok commute: downtown Palo Alto. Best commute, still walkable, bookstores/restaurants/cafes/clubs: downtown Mountain View

Agreed. It very much depends on where you’ll feel most comfortable. If it’s an option, I would suggest taking a short trip out here to assess your options.

Yes, you need to visit each area. It’s hard for your imagination of what it’s like to reflect your experience. Also, any other area mentioned here isn’t going to be anywhere near as urban or walkable. Fremont and North SJ just aren’t.

That's a really great idea! Airbnb out for a few days and experience it for a while.

Yes. I'm willing to do that. As long as I have a 10' x10' personal bedroom where I can lock the door and cry 😂

That's what my coworkers told me when I was washing dishes at a restaurant and doing interviews with Google.

That's going to be culture shock for a single person, NYC to Bay Area. I would suggest Palo Alto. DT PA is the liveliest area in the peninsula/south bay and adjacent to Mt View. You'll tire pretty quickly of suburban places like Campbell, Sunnyvale, Fremont, even Mt View coming from NYC. Los Gatos is nice, more of an older, affluent crowd there but it's a shitty commute and $2K you will be sharing a room. I know someone that came from Apple Retail in NYC, took a job at Apple HQ living in Campbell and she's pretty much done already and moving back to NYC next year...

Thanks for the suggestion! And the story of your friend. How do you think about DT SJ vs DT PA?

As much as I like some of the performing arts theatres and the film festival in SJ, it can be kind of ghetto and there's extremely limited shopping DT SJ. PA has far better resteraunts, bars, shopping. I told my friends father to tell her to move to PA but she ignored it and ended up in Campbell. Campbell had a smallish decent DT but coming from NY you'd get tired of it in two weeks. Commute will be awful from SJ too. Basically traveling any peninsula freeway north in the morning is bad, opposite in the eves. Oh, one other advantage of DT PA is the Caltrain stop right there. Easy travel anywhere along the peninsula from SF to SJ...

Share a 2 bed condo in North San Jose (Crescent village, North Park). Gbus every 15 mins during commute hours. Last bus is after 9PM. Shopping and restaurants close by.

You can live in Mountain View near Castro St and central expressway. Good crowd and close to Google. Other options, Palo Alto, San Mateo or Burlingame.
