Accepted a new grad swe offer from google in mtv (120/100/15) without negotiation because I really like Google and only had a similar offer from ms. Failed 4 onsites at unicorns in sf.

I know the pay band range is pretty big for L3 and mine is at the bottom. I’ve heard of negotiated offers up to (120/250/100). Is my TC stuck at bottom when promo to L4/L5 or is the position in pay band dependent at promo based on performance. If one negotiated higher at the beginning, is the room for TC to grow smaller?

Edit: my question has not been answered yet so I will clarify. Should I: 1)just work harder at Google or 2)do the leetcode needful and prepare to switch companies in 1-2 year

Edit: also looking for roommates. Apparently I cant afford rent 🤷‍♂️

Is that TC 145? That’s a starvation wage in the Bay Area. The good news is - you have google on your resume. Work there for a year and then you’ll be able to work anywhere.

High housing costs absolutely has to do with CA and specifically the Bay Areas politics. Lack of housing development will inflate costs.

Other large, rich metro areas have high housing costs, but also low housing cost areas. Because there’s enough built for both rich and poor to live.

U better not negotiate for starting role. They can revoke the offer if they see u stuck up and spoiled. If you get in on the high paying scale and don’t get promotion in few years ur salary raise will also be low. Low salary raise can put u at risk of being laid off because it is seen as u are not performing.

Pat yourself on the back for getting a job at the best tech company in the world and enjoy your work. $50k-100k won’t matter that much at all in the long run. Good luck!

  • Why does you really liking Google imply you can't negotiate ? I can't think of any scenario in which it makes sense not to negotiate.

    • Why would no competing offers prevent you from negotiation? Always negotiate. Always.

No leverage, he wasn't willing to turn down current offer because he's not sure that he could get any better than that. Would rather accept that than risk getting rejected due to him asking for more.

  • Forget all the haters in blind. Google is a great place with a lot of potential. Focus on doing great work in a team you enjoy and make sure to add value to your team/company. The rest will get fixed along the way (started at MS 12 years ago at 90k, left with ~500)
