is a masters in data science worth the time and money? if not what analytics centric master degree is reccomended for an bio eng undergrad whos been in tech consulting/finance industry for 4/5 years? #career #tech #dataanalyst #degree #graduatedegree#career #tech
Why not do a Masters in CS? You’d likely have far better options afterwards. Unless you really like pure Analytics, which is cool.
They don't really teach you stats in CS
I would still argue that an MS in CS will have a lot more opportunities, than an MS in DS.
Your YOE make a pretty big difference here if your asking how it affects your job prospects. Not sure if your 4/5 years are specifically in analytics/ML. But if they are, then once you hit between 5-7 yoe , then a masters probably won't be worth it. Unless your aiming for a PhD and a research position
No. Do a degree in a component field instead (stats, Econ, IE/OR, CS, eg). 1. These programs don’t create good data scientists. DS is a huge field and these programs typically make people barely mediocre in a few spots, not good at anything. Can’t tell you how many resumes I’ve seen with the same stupid toy projects on them, and how few grads actually really knew how they worked 😑. Gain real knowledge. 2. I see DS decreasing in popularity as ML Eng becomes more prominent. Modeling work will go to ML Eng, and remaining DS will look more like classic statisticians, so the job title will likely start to diminish. Get an education unattached to the job title so that your knowledge is clearly transferable. 3. MS in DS has little respect in the industry — largely due to aforementioned reasons. But this is a reason in and of itself. You want your resume to be picked up, not trashed. And you want respect years down the line when you’re looking at senior roles.

Anayltics degree from NC State is nice. It's job focused, gives you practical experience and gives you networking opportunities.
