I’ve been interviewing for a full time SE3 position with Nike to be on an engineering team that I worked with previously as a contractor not too long ago. As a contractor at Nike, they were paying me 58/hr. Interviews have gone well, and HR is now asking for my salary expectations, saying if all pans out I should be getting an offer this week. I’m making 110k in my current role, but my current role involves little to no leadership responsibilities. It’s a little bit of a leap for me, as I’ve really been a mid-level IC on engineering teams until now; I’d be taking on more team leadership responsibilities, representing the team in cross/department meetings, mentoring more junior engineers etc. I’ve got 5 YOE. How much is reasonable to ask for? I want to ask for 130, is that too much? Too little for an ask knowing they’ll probably counter regardless? I’d appreciate your thoughts. #swe #salary #salarynegotiation
In which location? Ask for $160k
I used to work at Nike in Beaverton. For TC for SE3 I’d expect 160
I was making 110 as sde1 with less than 1 YOE at the time
Im se2 making 135k with 7 yoe. Yep its that bad. Ask for 160k base

In our experience, sharing your salary expectations can work against you in receiving a fair offer. The company might tell you that if your salary/ compensation expectations are known then they can try to find the best deal for both you and the company. But we know that they’re working for the company, not you. If you share a lower compensation than what they could offer, they are more likely to offer you that low compensation. If you throw out a number higher than what they could offer, there is the chance that they could become disinterested and decide to go a different route. Further, it simply doesn’t make sense to discuss compensation before you learn more about the role, responsibilities, and benefits that will be provided - especially if you're moving into a full time role. It's best to get an offer from them and then negotiate. We can help you with tips to not disclose your salary expectations if you want.
