Should I take a contract to hire offer from Disney?
$96/hr offer (~200 as salary). If I was a regular hire I would definitely take it, but worried since it is a contract (contract does have health insurance though).

Currently an analytics lead, offer is for Data Engineer.

Current TC: 115
YOE: 5

The TC bump is significant enough where I would personally consider it.

My first role out of college was at a startup (104K TC) then I took a contractor role at Meta (135K TC), then I converted to FTE at Meta (170K TC), then I got promoted at Meta (240K TC).

Being a contractor can be used as a stepping stone to convert to FTE and bolster your resume with a name brand if you play it right, but I wouldn’t really do it if you already have the resume to get competitive FTE offers. I’ll probably never choose a contractor role again.

Best advice would be to keep your LC skills sharp so you can ladder up your TC.

Thanks for the reply! I think my resume is okay, although Disney would be the first “name brand”. I get reached out to by a lot of recruiters, currently also in process and Meta and Amazon, but I’m not sure if my skills are strong enough to actually get through those interviews.

  • If Disney is giving you a contract to hire role, then that means they don’t think you’re up to the current standard but there’s a chance. I would only ever issue a contract to hire offer if I have doubts about someone’s technical skills, but think they can definitely grow into it. If you’re prepared to go all in and excel then go for it, set your expectation that you want to go FTE early on. If you’re not the type to go all in and need handholding and a relatively long time to ramp up, I wouldn’t go for it. You’ll end up in a bad position.

Damn, that’s too bad. I really appreciate your input as a current employee, so thank you. The consensus here seems to support taking it (or at least taking the role and continuing to interview). Your comments are definitely making me lean away though

    • It’s really up to you, all I’m saying is that if your final goal is to get full time, the chances are slim. But if you’re taking it for the salary bump and will continue looking, that’s definitely also an option. Either way just trying to make sure you understand what’s going on from disneys point of view.

  • I’ve always wondered if asking for 1.25x your full time rate during contract period will be acceptable given the uncertainty?

Ha, not exactly, but I see your point. I’m just nervous, I’ve never had a contract role before + apparently some people think I should stay according to the poll
