I have 8 YOE as an SWE. I'm currently at Expedia (SDEII). TC 140K. I'm currently applying for SWE positions and when preparing for the system design interview, I'm finding it difficult to come with particularly interesting past projects that I worked on. I worked in many teams and developed many services/applications, mostly on the Product side, and worked on relatively recent technologies but from engineering perspective, nothing stands out as a candidate project to talk about in an interview. The idea I have so far is to pick the 2 most interesting pieces of work that I've done and spice them up a bit. Another concern I have here is none of these interesting projects being recent, meaning my memory (and answers) won't be sharp if I'm asked about certain details, decisions, etc.. How do you recommend I prepare for this part of the interview? Feedback is highly welcome :) Thanks!
Design distributed facebook app such that there is no centralized authority. Tell them it is your pet project. Any difficult questions are ‘confidential’ you can’t tell them.
For me i pick the longest project i have worked(approx 2 years out of my 4 year career at Expedia) and tell them why on earth it took 2 years.

If you present it properly, even running a lemonade stand can be the coolest product you’ve ever worked on.
