Was fortunate enough to get a job offer at a large corporation. I've been told usually doesn't hurt to try to ask some more, despite current economic situation. I currently have no job and no competing offers. How would I go about asking for more from here?

Recruiter said interview feedback was excellent. I was planning to give hard numbers (no ranges) of my expectations, citing research I've done for comparable roles, my skills/experiences, and interview performance. My understanding is that I should start high and they might come back with an in between offer. Anything else I should consider?

Offer TC: 120k

Accept what you are getting now as you dont have a job. Then start looking. You are not in a position to negotiate

  • OP, they need to invest significant time in finding good candidates. You have the leverage of being a sure shot now. The long line of people waiting for your job is a myth in the sense that it takes time to find another excellent candidate like you within that long line. It doesn’t hurt to ask for more. Worst case they don’t match. Of course, don’t overshoot by too much but it looks like you did the research.

    Good luck!

I would be incredibly surprised if an offer was rescinded because of good faith negotiation. Having been on both sides as an applicant and as a hiring manager: negotiate, worst they’ll say is no and most likely that no will come after a couple of days of them trying to decide. When they say no, you can still say yes!

For real, from their perspective they’re trying to sell you at this point. Even if they don’t come up they want you to have a good experience or decide to join in spite of a salary below your expectations

One trick that has always worked for me as a last attempt to get more is to say that if you increase X by Z value, I would sign right away. Where X could be either base or stocks or joining bonus etc and Z is not a huge number but something in range of 5k to 10k, depends on the original offer. You can also say something like you are very dedicated and want to be compensated for that etc. Use this at the last stage of your negotiation and they usually match that demand since they also want to close this position.

  • Do the negotiation over the phone if you are worried about the offer getting rescinded.
If the recruiter's response doesn't sound very positive after your quote, you can tell them you'll be thrilled if the TC can be raised but you will be happy with the current offer.

I agree that you should take the approach you outlined. They want to hire you, as long as your proposal is not grossly out of touch with reality. You’ll be fine my friend.
