Hey all, I’ve taken some time to re-evalute my life’s trajectory in the wake of the layoffs that just happened (I wasn’t canned, but I know far too many who were). I’ve decided that I want to be closer to family, which would mean moving back to SoCal. Since I don’t want to live in LA for personal reasons, it seems like San Diego would be a good option. Unfortunately, San Diego is not exactly a tech sector hub city. Most of the opportunities I’ve come across on hiring websites are at smaller corps that contract with the government, and I’m simply not interested in doing that sort of work. Does anyone out there have any reccomendations of organizations in the area worth looking into, preferably places that have openings in either Python development or DevOps work? Thanks!

FAANGs will pay you way, way more than your current 100k. There's a few in San Diego, although smaller offices.
Admittedly, I’m kind of on the fence with respect to FAANG - for all the interesting technical problems they have, there’s equivalently many ethical concerns I have with pretty much all of those orgs (with the notable exception of Netflix). I was hoping for something that would be more in-line with my ethics and related to a cause I actually care about (such as something related to healthcare, as opposed to building better bombs/fighter jets).
There's a startup in San Diego called Shield AI that is building unarmed drones to map buildings and protect first responders/soldiers. Pretty cool mission, you should check them out.

So far as I can tell, they’re most definitely a major player. Intuit and HashiCorp are also there, along with a couple FAANG outposts. Also the TC package at a lot of these places is less than what I’m making right now ($100,000/yr), and I’m not really keen on taking a salary less than what I’m already being paid.
